World Health Day - Depression Wellness Tips
Every year WHO (World Health Organization) celebrates its anniversary and this year's theme is Depression which they define as "an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks."
Per webMD and other notable sources explained how depression is sometimes linked to physical symptoms. such as
- Fatigue and decreased energy
- Insomnia, especially early-morning waking
- Excessive sleep
- Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment
- Changes in appetite or weight (increase or decrease of either can occur)
- Can destroy, careers, hobbies, relationships because it can cause a lot of turmoil
- Indecisiveness, hard to concentrate
Experts think that while stress -- such as losing a loved one -- can trigger depression, one must first be biologically prone to develop the disorder. They believe that altered brain structure and chemical function could be the cause of depression and medications that treat depression help those brain circuits to regulate better. Some of those key brain chemicals influence both mood and pain. Treating depression has been shown to improve co-existing illnesses and help address some of the problems listed above.
Let's kick depression in the butt!!! Some ways to do that are through talk, cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise, light therapy (helpful especially for seasonal depression), supplements such as St. John's Wart, pets, social support, aromatherapy using essential oils such as lavender or blends such as chill pill, medications or even a combination of the aforementioned suggestions for an even greater chance of success.
Personally, if depression can be treated without meds, let's try it but if medications do help, go for it. The meds are not intended to be used for life and may help correct those malfunctioning brain chemicals that may be occurring.
Find what works for you (talking, meds, etc) but don't do it alone. Doing it alone will only take you so far...just as a coach pushes his athletes to reach levels they were unaware were attainable, working with someone increases your chances of success.
The key take away WHO wants this year is for people to seek help without the fear of the stigma associated with seeking help. You deserve to make that smile genuine and no longer a mask.
